Should Laser Surgery be Considered to Stop Snoring?

According to the statistics, there are an alarming 50% of individuals that snore. Knowing how harmful snoring is, one would think the statistic would show a much smaller number of snorers. The statistic reflect only adults that snore around 25% of them are occasional snorers and the remaining 25% are chronic snorers. The number of women and children that snore is also on the rise.

Snoring is considered to be a condition directly related to health. Depending on the severity of the snoring, will determine the best course of treatment. Snoring is a vibration of the soft tissue against the airways of the person. Usually, the tissue becomes too relaxed for some reason, and causes the snoring to be heard.

There are a few known causes for snoring. Some of the more common are overweight, sleep apnea, pregnancy and adenoids. To be sure of the specific cause for your snoring problem you should seek medical help. In some cases the solution to your snoring problem might be a relatively easy one.

If you allow your snoring to go untreated you could be setting yourself up for some more serious health related consequences. You could be diagnosed with UARS, or more commonly referred to as Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, and obstructive sleep apnea. As soon as you realize your snoring is not an occasional thing, such as when you are suffering from a cold or the flu, you should seek the professional opinion of your medical care provider.

After several attempts to stop snoring many people are turning to an alternate course of action. Once you notice that the home remedies are not working and you are tired of wasting money on useless over the counter remedies, you might want to talk with your doctor or health care provider about a fairly new procedure called LAUP, or Laser-Assisted Uvula Palatoplasty.

This surgery is done with five treatments. It can take on average five to eight months to be completed. You will need to have a few office visits before you can have the laser surgery done. Basically, during the treatment you will have some of the soft palate and the uvula vaporized. These are the parts that generally cause the vibration and the snoring sound. You will be required to undergo a local anesthetic for the surgery. For the most part, almost immediately after you have the procedure done you will be able to go back to your daily activities.

As with any procedure that is done you will have some side effects. Typically the only side effect that you will have is a sore throat. In some cases, it might be severe and last upwards towards ten days or so. You might also be prescribed an anti-inflammatory medication to limit the swelling and a smaller dose of a pain reliever to help with the discomfort of the throat.

If you decide you want to have the surgery done, you might be very glad you did. Your spouse or significant other may thank you as well. Soon, you will be on your way to a better nights sleep and so will your significant other.
